Back in the 90s, a European biotech company decided to test genetically modified version of Klebsiella planticola in the wild. At that time GMO Klebsiella planticola was proven to be safe in the lab. The genetic engineers were trying to solve a problem with corn and wheat residue leftover and find a way to decompose the residue without burning the crops. Burning the leftover crops will leave a thick and dangerous smoke behind which is not good for people’s health or the environment.
The researchers thought that they could solve the problem with the crops residue if they took a gene that led to alcohol production from yeast and inserted it into the bacteria Klebsiella planticola. That way the farmers didn’t have to decompose the crops by burning them and they could have used the alcohol in the crops for cooking. The researchers also thought that they could create a sludge byproduct that could be used as fertilizer and is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur, magnesium, and calcium.
But when Dr. Ingham and her team examined the environmental and ecological impact of the sludge byproduct as a fertilizer, they found out that plants grown in the fertilizer died within a week. ‘The parent bacterium makes a slime layer that helps it stick to the plant's roots. The engineered bacterium makes about 17 parts per million alcohol. What is the level of alcohol that is toxic to roots? About one part per million. The engineered bacterium makes the plants drunk, and kills them’ Dr. Ingham wrote in her research paper in 1998.
Although Klebsiella planticola is a bacteria found in the root of every plant in our ecosystem, the genetically modified version of Klebsiella planticola could have killed every single plant in our habitat.
A recent report by USDA suggests that 12 illegal varieties of GMO wheat are growing in the state of Washington. Many studies have linked GMOs to many environmental and health issues, however more than 90% of US acres are planted with GMO soy, corn and cotton. While GMO wheat are not approved for commercial farming in US, the Roundup ready wheat is growing in the state of Washington and possibly bioaccumulating in the soil and contaminating our farms.
South Korea, the fifth market for US wheat just suspended customs clearance due to safety issues over US wheat. In the last few years, there have been other incidents that genetically modified rice or wheat have sneaked into US commercial rice or wheat exports to more than 30 different countries.
Despite the environmental and health risks associated with GMO salmon, USDA recently approved genetically modified salmon for public consumption in US.
While the illegal varieties of GMOs are sneaking into our food supply, the Obama administration signs the dark act that will allow giant food companies to hide GMO ingredients in our food supply. While GMO crops are banned in 38 different countries and more than 60 countries have mandatory GMO labeling law, the US Congress passes a law that kills GMO labeling efforts in states such as Vermont or Connecticut.
Back in 2008 it was Michelle Obama who said that for the first time ever she is proud of her country. 8 years later, in 2016 during the Democratic National Convention she praised Hillary Clinton who is in favor of frankenfoods and ranted how ‘America is already great, America is already strong’. ‘It’s the story that I witness every single day, when I wake up in a house that was built by slaves, and I watch my daughters – two beautiful, black young women – head off to school, waving goodbye to their father, the President of the United States’ Michelle Obama continued.
However, the reality cannot be any further from the truth. In fact, Obama has left a legacy worse than Bush when it comes to food transparency, drones, NSA and Obama Care spying, attacks on journalism and whistleblowers, government lies and corruption, and violations of our Constitutional rights, and cracking down on civil liberties.
In US, One in five children live below the federal poverty line when banksters and Wall Street gangs benefit from a chaotic economy and disintegrating monetary system. 1% of the US population owns 42% of wealth and while the whistle blowers and activists receive harsh punishments for exposing a crime, the Wall Street gangs and banksters are immune from the judicial system.
